Frequently Asked
Questions
What is
ASIS?
The Advance Speed Information
System (ASIS) is a portable, automated, real-time smart work zone
system that monitors vehicular speeds at various
points on a freeway and displays downstream vehicular
speeds at upstream locations.
Can ASIS
be used on any freeway - whether there is a work zone or
not?
Yes. ASIS can be used
on any freeway that experiences congestion and
incidents. It can be used on freeway with or
without work zones. ASIS is expected to reduce rear-end
crashes that are often caused by drastic actions on the
part of the motorists due to lack of traffic speed
information ahead of them.
What are the expected benefits of ASIS
?
ASIS is expected to reduce
rear-end crashes by allowing motorists to adjust their
speeds and reduce the elements of “surprise”.
What
kind of equipment and communication devices does ASIS
use?
ASIS uses microwave radar
sensors to monitor traffic flow on each lane of the
freeway, up to eight lanes. However, other sensors that
can provide contact-closure signals can be used, if
necessary. ASIS
uses radios/modems (or cellular routers, if necessary) to communicate among various equipment
including changeable message signs and sensor trailers.
Does ASIS
need a "base station" ?
No, it does not. The
changeable message signs (CMSs) or sensor trailers are
stand-alone devices that can operate without a "base
station". They can communicate with each other through
radios/modems (or cellular routers, if necessary) and the CMSs can display traffic speeds
that motorists would encounter ahead of them.
