Frequently Asked Questions What is TIPS?The Travel Time Prediction System (TIPS) is a portable, automated, real-time smart work zone system for displaying travel-time or delay information to motorists in advance of and through work zones. It collects real-time traffic flow data using roadside non-contact sensors, computes estimated travel time between different points on the freeway, and displays travel time information on several portable, electronic changeable message signs positioned at pre-determined locations along the freeway. Can TIPS be used on any freeway - whether there is a work zone or not?Yes. TIPS can be used on any freeway that experiences congestion or incidents. It can be used on any freeway, with or without work zones. TIPS is expected to collect real-time traffic flow data, compute estimated travel time between different points on the freeway, and display travel time information on several portable, electronic changeable message signs. Can TIPS be used on rural or urban freeway work zones ?Yes, TIPS can be used on rural, suburban, or urban freeway work zones. Since each work zone has unique characteristics, TIPS can be customized to fulfill the requirements of each work zone. Although TIPS was developed to provide travel time information to motorists in work zones, it can be used on any freeway that experiences recurring traffic congestion. What kind of roadside sensor does TIPS use ?Currently, TIPS uses microwave radar sensors to monitor traffic flow on each lane of the freeway, upto eight lanes. However, other sensors that can provide contact-closure signals can be used, if necessary. How is electricity provided to roadside sensors, radios, or other devices?All roadside equipment receive 12V DC electrical power from solar panels and batteries. Can TIPS display travel-time or delay information on any changeable message sign ?Yes, PDP Associates works with the supplier or manufacturer of the CMS so that it can be integrated with TIPS.
