Traffic Information &  Prediction System (TIPS)

TIPS is a portable, automated, real-time smart work zone  system for predicting and displaying travel time or delay information to motorists in advance of and through freeway work zones. The system collects real-time traffic flow data using roadside non-contact sensors, calculates travel time between different points on the freeway, and displays the travel time information on several portable changeable message signs at pre-determined locations along the freeway.

TIPS can be used on any freeway that experiences congestion – with or without work zones. The real-time speed information can be displayed on large, permanent overhead variable message signs, if necessary.

TIPS

  • Integrates sensors and changeable message signs with intelligent software that calculates the most current travel times at 30-sec intervals

  • Uses radios/modems (or cellular routers, if necessary) for wireless communications among all devices.

  Additionally, TIPS

  • Allows remote control of the system from any place.

  • Allows manual override of the messages displayed on the signs. For example, the user can remotely display special messages, such as "ACCIDENT AHEAD"; or "FREEWAY CLOSED AT RT XXX", when a quick and effective incident management tool is needed.

  • Provides real-time information on the internet and in rest areas, truck stops, office complexes, and large traffic generators.

  • Integrates cameras that can bring live pictures of the highway to the internet.

 Major Components of TIPS

  • Microwave radar sensors

  • Radios/modems (or cellular routers, if necessary)

  • Software with intelligent traffic algorithm and model

  • Mobile solar-powered trailers

  • Changeable message signs
